The Yeomen of the Guard
How say you, maiden, will you wed a man about to lose his head?
A noble knight is to be beheaded at dawn. Desperate only to prevent a treacherous
kinsman from inheriting his estate, his sole wish is to marry during his
final hours. As any virtuous maid will serve, his request is satisfied with
an impoverished singing girl. Little does anyone know that unseen comrades
have already arranged his escape!
For centuries, the Tower of London was a working fort and dreaded prison.
Gilbert & Sullivan's dramatic comic opera takes us back to Tudor times,
when innocents who misjudged the political winds were as likely as criminals
to face the executioner's axe on its green. It was a city within a city,
policed by the elite Yeomen of the Guard - the "beefeaters." Families
lived inside it, eagerly anticipating the diversion provided by jesters
... or executions! With lives at stake, the co-mingling of the Tower's residents,
visitors, and prisoners provided Gilbert & Sullivan with a setting for
poignant drama, true "gallows" humor, and glorious melody. Don't
lose your head!
