James Higgins

This show is dedicated to 3 people: my friend David Taylor, and my parents, Bob and Rosanna Higgins.

Almost all of my early adult life was wholly intertwined with that of David’s.  We met in the summer of 1989, an impossibly long time ago, and yet, yesterday. At 19, we started a theater company in Montreal with our friend Robin for the sole purpose of producing Sweeney. I directed, Robin produced, and Dave was the eponymous barber. None of us knew what we were doing, but it started us all on a marvelous journey. Dave’s journey ended in the early days of COVID, and I think of him every day. My father bought me the Sweeney score for Christmas of 1987. It was $75, and certainly more than we could afford. He and my mom always nurtured and encouraged my and my sister’s dreams; and when we needed to rehearse that aforementioned Sweeney in our living room, my mother volunteered to design costumes and stage manage (having done neither before), and my father not only helped build the set, but he would make a pre-rehearsal pot of chili or spaghetti for anyone who showed up early and hungry. Dad died in October of 2024, but he would have loved to have been here. Mom is doing great, thanks! She's going to Denmark in October!
